AI coding assistants in 2026: Cursor vs. Copilot vs. Claude Code

Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Claude Code all promise to make you faster, but they make very different trade-offs. We ran all three against the same mid-sized TypeScript codebase for two weeks.

The setup

Each tool handled the same kinds of work: fixing bugs, adding small features, and a couple of multi-file refactors. Same machine, same repo, same tasks — only the assistant changed.

Speed and code quality

Copilot still has the smoothest inline completions. Cursor pulled ahead on multi-file edits and project context, while Claude Code was the strongest at planning a change before touching the code.

Which should you use?

If you live in autocomplete, Copilot is hard to beat. For larger, context-heavy changes, Cursor and Claude Code were noticeably more reliable — and the difference grows with the size of the task.
